Curated by a local travel expert
10 Days in Croatia
From Zagreb's upper town to Plitvice lakes, Zadar's islands, Krk's mud baths, and Istria's coast — a local expert's route.
This is how I'd plan it for friends visiting in June or September: one base per region, no packing every night, and the right mix of culture, water, and adrenaline. Every stop below is doable in a day — I've timed them for real driving distances.
Estimated route
- No driving today — settle in and explore on foot
Today's plan
Upper town by funicular, museums locals love, and the noon cannon
Start with the funicular — 64 seconds up to Upper Town and you're in the heart of old Zagreb. Join the free walking tour for orientation, then give the afternoon to two museums that define the city: one emotional, one playful. Finish green at Maksimir before Lotrščak fires at noon tomorrow if you miss it today.
- Funicular to Upper Town — St Mark's Church and stone lanes
- Zagreb free walking tour from Ban Jelačić Square
- Museum of Broken Relationships & Museum of Illusions
- Maksimir Park & Zoo — Croatia's oldest public park
- Lotrščak Tower & the noon cannon (fires daily at 12:00)
Book Museum of Illusions online in July–August. Stay in Lower Town for trams, or Upper Town if you don't mind cobblestones with luggage.

- En route from Zagreb — river & zip line stop before Plitvice (~2.5 h total)
Today's plan
Emerald river rafting, zip line, and adrenaline in the karst hills
Break up the drive south from Zagreb with whitewater and zip lines. The Mrežnica is gentle enough for first-timers — Class I–II rapids through limestone canyons with swimming holes between paddles. Then push on to an adventure park in the karst hills near Karlovac before settling into your Plitvice guesthouse for the next two nights.
- Rafting on the Mrežnica River — 2–3 hour guided trip
- Adrenaline Park in the karst hills
- Zip line over the river valley
Rafting runs April–October. Operators provide wetsuits — bring a full change of clothes and leave valuables in the car.

- Same base — park entrance ~10 min away
Today's plan
Boardwalks through sixteen lakes, Rastoke mills, and a Korana swim
Full day at the lakes — enter the national park early and take the lower lakes loop past Veliki Slap. On the way back, stop at Rastoke where the Slunjčica River splits into miniature waterfalls between old watermills. End the day swimming in the Korana River — locals' secret, crystal clear, and nothing like the park crowds.
- Plitvice National Park — lower lakes route & Veliki Slap waterfall
- Rastoke village — waterfall alleys between stone mills
- Korana River swimming near your guesthouse
Buy timed park entry online the night before. Swimming inside Plitvice is forbidden — Korana outside the park is where you cool off.

- En route from Plitvice — canyon paddle, then on to Zadar (~2.5 h total)
Today's plan
Canoeing through the Zrmanja canyon
One of Dalmatia's finest half-day adventures: paddle the Zrmanja through a narrow canyon where cliffs rise 200 metres and the water runs turquoise-green. No experience needed — calm stretches alternate with easy rapids, and guides stop at swimming pools beneath overhanging rock. Back in Zadar by evening for fish on the riva.
- Zrmanja River canoeing — 3–4 hour guided trip
- Swim stops in natural pools beneath the cliffs
- Easy Zadar old town evening — Roman forum & harbour
Wear shoes that can get wet — flip-flops aren't allowed at most put-ins. Best water levels May through September.

- Same base — speedboat marina ~10 min from old town
Today's plan
Island speedboat by day, Sea Organ at sunset
Your Zadar base day. Book a half-day speedboat — the short version hits Osljak, Ugljan, and Galevac monastery islet with three swim stops and you're back by late afternoon. Or commit to a full day: Kornati National Park and Dugi Otok for the serious island lovers. Save your best hour for the Sea Organ at sunset — the steps play music when the Adriatic rolls in.
- Island hopping by speedboat — Osljak, Ugljan & Galevac (short version)
- Or full-day Kornati archipelago & Dugi Otok (long version)
- Sea Organ & Greeting to the Sun at sunset
The short island hop suits anyone prone to seasickness. Kornati needs 48-hour advance booking and a full day — no half measures.

- ~2 h drive via Paklenica canyon & Krk bridge
Today's plan
Velebit canyon, Manita Cave, and over the bridge to Krk
Drive the coast toward Krk, but stop first at Paklenica National Park — a dramatic Velebit canyon that doubles as a film set. Walk the short trail to Manita peć cave (guided tours on fixed schedules). Then cross the Krk bridge — no ferry needed — and settle into island time with a dusk walk through old town Krk.
- Paklenica National Park — Velika Paklenica canyon trail
- Manita peć cave — guided underground tour
- Drive across Krk bridge & evening in Krk old town
Manita Cave tours usually run at 10:00, 12:00, and 14:00 — arrive 30 minutes early in peak season. Cave stays 10°C; bring a layer.

- Same base — ~20 min around the island
Today's plan
Klimno Bay, Soline mud therapy, diving & water sports
Krk's north coast is where locals go on weekends. Klimno Bay stays shallow and warm for fifty metres — perfect for a slow morning. At Soline, natural peloid mud from the salt pans makes a free spa: smear it on, let it dry in the sun, rinse in the sea. Add diving, zip line, or jet-ski in the afternoon if you want more adrenaline.
- Klimno Bay — calm swimming & beach bars
- Soline Beach — natural mud therapy from the salt pans
- Krk diving, zip line, mud therapy & water sports
Bring an old towel for the mud — rinse in the sea, not the hotel shower. Try-dives from Punat start around €60 with 15–25 m visibility in summer.

- ~3 h drive via Postojna Cave (Slovenia)
Today's plan
Slovenian caves, cliff castle, and the motorway to Istria
Cross into Slovenia for Postojna Cave — a miniature train through cathedral-sized underground chambers, then a photo stop at Predjama Castle built into a cliff face. Buy your Slovenian e-vignette online before the border (evinjeta.dars.si). Drive on to Poreč for the night — Istria's coast awaits.
- Postojna Cave — underground train & walking tour
- Predjama Castle — medieval fortress in the rock
- Slovenian e-vignette — purchase online before the border crossing
Combined Postojna + Predjama ticket saves about €5 and one queue. Digital vignettes activate in ~15 minutes after purchase.

- Same base — no driving, marina cruises nearby
Today's plan
Aquacolors water park and a dolphin-watching cruise
Split the day between slides and sea life. Hit Aquacolors at opening — Istria's largest water park — and leave by early afternoon before the queues peak. Then board a dolphin-watching cruise from Poreč or Funtana; bottlenose dolphins live here year-round, and good skippers never chase them.
- Aquacolors water park — slides, lazy river & pools
- Dolphin-watching cruise from Poreč marina
- Evening walk to Euphrasian Basilica — UNESCO mosaics at dusk
Aquacolors queues peak 11:00–14:00. Dolphin sightings are reported on roughly 85% of summer trips — bring binoculars anyway.

- ~2.5 h motorway drive back to Zagreb
Today's plan
Coastal drive home and last tastes of the capital
Morning drive back to Zagreb (about 2.5 hours from Poreč). Slow coffee, Dolac market for honey and lavender, one final štrukli if you have time. Allow 45 minutes to the airport — weekday traffic is unpredictable.
- Scenic drive Poreč → Zagreb via Istrian motorway
- Dolac open-air market — souvenirs & local cheese
- Final coffee in Upper Town before departure
Dolac is liveliest Saturday 7:00–13:00. If your flight is evening, stash bags and walk Tkalciceva for a last meal.
